I decided to name my school magazine 'Break-time' as this is relevant to what the magazine is about and pupils can read it when they are on their break. I also feel that it is quirky and easy to remember. The masthead is located in the top left hand corner underneath my magazines header. I chose to put it here as this is the most common place for it to go and is the first thing that you would read. As the back ground of the magazine is white the title stands out more and draws your attention to it. I chose to use yellow and black for the title as the yellow is eye-catching and the school uniform colours are black and yellow. I like the style that the writing is in because it stands out more than just having a normal plain font.
My main image is of a student from the school. The main image is located on the right side of the magazine. The shot used is a close up, you can see from the shoulders up. The main image goes from the bottom of the magazine up to being in-line with the masthead. On my draft the main image is of a girl in the school uniform, as shown in the picture on the right of this text. I chose to have my image in black and white so that the other colours used on the magazine are shown up more. I also like the simple, modernist look of black white and yellow being used together.
On my cover i have used 3 sell lines to grab the readers attention. In-between the 3 sell lines i have used lines to split them all up. I have used a plain font for the 1st and 3rd sell lines and a bolder yellow for the 2nd sell line. I have used the bold yellow with the black outline for the second sell line as i think that this one is the most important and the one that pupils attending the school would want to read about. For my first sell line i have used 'Exclusive interview with the rugby and swimming teams' i think that this would appeal to the pupils that like gossip. I have included two subsidiary images to go with this text to show who a few members of the rugby and swimming teams are. My second sell line is '5 top tips for revising' as when my exams and class tests were coming up i had trouble finding a good way to revise, pupils with the same problem will want to find out some tips to help them revise. My third sell line is 'the new sixth form common room' which could encourage pupils in year 11 to come back to the school for sixth form.
The pug that i have chosen for my magazine is '2017 skiing trip'. The pug itself is simple and follows the colour scheme of the school like the rest of the magazine. The information that is given in the pug is straight forward and lets you know that there will be more information in the magazine about a 2017 skiing trip. My pug is located in the top right hand corner between the header and a graphic coming out of the masthead.
The splash that i have chosen to use is 'New Head Boy' as i feel that this would intrigue the reader into wanting to find out who the new head boy of the school is. The splash i have used is straight forward and is located at the bottom left hand side of the magazine, covering the one shoulder of the girl in my main image.
This image underneath is my draft cover completed. You can now see the colour scheme properly and i think that it works very well. You can see the header that i have used, 'New Coffee Bar', i think this is a good header as it would make pupils want to find out where the new coffee bar is and what they can buy there on their break-times. You can also see the bar code that i used to add detail and on the final cover i will include the price of 80p. I chose to sell my magazine for 80p as it is being sold to pupils that may not have a lot of money to be spending, therefore this is perfect for my target audience of ages 11-17. I am pleased with how my front cover turned out and i think that i laid it out well as i used a grid layout to base my cover around.
